CR Stecyk

Stecyk, who was born, raised and still resides in Venice, is an influential multihyphenate in the area’s surf and skateboard scene. In the ’70s and ’80s, he wrote about and photographed skate culture; he created graphics for the Zephyrs and the Bones Brigade, the skate crew whose roster included then-unknowns like Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen. Stecyk, who began frequenting the Café soon after it opened in 1979, covered its walls with a combination of bright 14-by-22-inch posters and imagery from the neighborhood, like photographs of the late skateboarder Jay Adams and of a Pacific Electric grid car. He also ground local soil into pigments that can be used in silk-screens and letterpresses.
